MULTIPLE SITE WIDE AREA SYSTEMS

Wide area systems comprise multiple audible alert units and one or more centralised controllers. They are normally installed by government or .local government and operated by Civil Defence personnel.

Each audible alert unit comprises

An electronic siren with three 100 watt outputs

Three 100 watt high efficiency horn speakers, each with a dispersion angle of 120 degrees

Sealed lead acid battery with capacity to operate the siren for at least thirty minutes

Solar panel and regulator to charge the battery and maintain that charge

Controller providing activation, remote test, and monitoring functions

Radio transceiver and antenna with lightning protection

Optional activation switch and public address microphone for local operation

The speakers and solar panel are normally mounted at the top of a pole, with the electronics and battery in a secure weatherproof enclosure on the side of the pole at a height where it is not readily accessible without a ladder.

The local activation switch and microphone are housed in a secure but accessible location on the pole.

The system is controlled over a radio channel with equipment at a centralised location such as Civil Defence Headquarters. Secondary control equipment can be installed in other locations to provide redundancy or back up operation. For example basic equipment could be installed in a Civil Defence Officer's vehicle.

The following functions can be controlled from the primary location

Activate - siren will operate for a pre-programmed period, e.g. 10 - 15 minutes

Test - siren will operate for a short pre-programmed period, e.g. 20 seconds

Cancel - siren will stop

Poll - tests the integrity of the radio link without operating the system

Remote public address - activates public address function. Operator at central location can broadcast over system

Alert units monitor battery condition and system security and transmit any off normal conditions to the base equipment.
